Methodology
- Vehicle out-of-service (OOS) rate = inspections with at least one vehicle OOS violation ÷ inspections that included a vehicle check (levels 1, 2, 5, 6).
- Driver OOS rate = inspections with at least one driver OOS violation ÷ inspections that included a driver check (levels 1, 2, 3, 6).
- Crashes per 100 power units = FMCSA reportable crashes in the crash window ÷ current power units × 100. Crashes are recorded regardless of fault.
- Benchmarks are pooled rates across all 9,478 active for-hire carriers with 50+ power units, by size band: 50–99, 100–249, 250–499, 500–999, 1,000+ units, and by headquarters state.
- Similar carriers: same state, scored by cargo-type overlap (Jaccard) minus fleet-size distance (log ratio).
- Nearby carriers: same city, then same 3-digit ZIP area.
- Miles per power unit only uses mileage reported for 2023 or later.
National pooled vehicle OOS rate: 17.8%; driver OOS rate: 2.1%; crashes per 100 power units: 3.5.
This is descriptive public data, not a safety rating or a recommendation. FMCSA's own SMS methodology differs (severity and time weights).
